I am Sandy Berenbaum.  I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and am a member of the National Association of Social Workers.  I am a Board Certfied Diplomate, certified by the American Board of Examiners, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the States of NY and CT.  I have been in private practice for 21 years.

My specialty has always been adolescents and families.  I adhere to a problem-solving approach to individual and family counseling.  Improving communication within families is extremely important, so that when there are differences, everyone is heard and understood.

I believe in a comprehensive approach to counseling.  At times, there are underlying problems that are not apparent when families first come to me.  There may be a medical illness or undiagnosed learning disabilities causing current academic and/or behavioral problems.  When that becomes apparent, I address these problems with the family, and at times suggest additional resources.

At times, my work with families uncovers a need for services in the school or community.  When a need has been identified, advocacy becomes a part of my work.

I also believe in collaboration among professionals.  If there are medical or school professionals involved, I will gladly speak with them, as long as I have the proper consent.

In the context of my work, I have developed networks of resources that can be helpful to a family, and offer suggestions regarding these resources when a need is identified.
